Following graduation James joined the United States Navy on September 6, 1966. He was united in marriage to Lana Lynn Gordon in Corpus Christi. Following the completion of his duties James and Lana remained in Corpus Christi and he gained employment as an air traffic controller. He was later transferred to Lincoln, Nebraska and completed his career at Kansas City in 1981. James later moved to Tulsa and worked at the Old Village Apartments before gaining employment at the Bryce House in Tulsa, Oklahoma. James has been working there since 1990, where he has helped many people with their daily struggles with alcohol and drug addiction. Survivors are his two children Christopher B. Govaerts of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Kerilynn Duis of Terlton, Oklahoma, brother Ken Govaerts and his wife Kathy Govaerts of Lincoln, Nebraska; sister Jan Taylor and her husband Mitch of San Pedro, California; Macey, Lana, Bryson, Drake, Raelynn, Kodee, Konner; great grandson Maddox James and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father Jack Govaerts; mother Betty Govaerts, wife Lana Lynn Gordon Govaerts and a son Michael James Govaerts.
